در کشورهای در حال توسعه، غذاهایی که در دوران از شیر گرفتن شیر خوار در منزل آماده می شوند، ممکن است در شرایط غیر بهداشتی تهیه شده و اغلب آلوده به میکروبهای بیماری زا باشند. بیش از ۷۰ درصد از موارد بیماریهای اسهالی ناشی از غذای آلوده است . اشرشیاکولی سبب ۲۵ درصد از این اسهالها میگردد. غذا اغلب محیط مناسبی جهت رشد میکروبها به شمار می رود و از طریق مدفوع می تواند موجب انتقال آنها گردد.
